There is no other way to enjoy desert experience other than riding the gentle giant that roams the hardship areas. The 'ship of the desert' offers a great vantage point for viewing nature . One seven-day arrangement through north and central Kenya is accompanied by Samburu worrior guides. A support vehicle carries luggage, tents and supplies. Camel Safaris. CAMEL RIDING DERBY IN MARALAL TOWN

If you're in Kenya in August, head up north to Maralal for the annual Camel Derby. Skilled camel-riders from Northern Kenya's camel-rearing communities take part in a wild and bumpy 42 km race through the streets of this normally quiet desert town.

Winning the Derby is a great local honour, and there is prize-money and trophies at stake, making this a hotly-fought contest.

This colourful event is not just a spectator sport, there is also an amateur, 10km race which anyone can take part in. You don't need your own camel: simply hire one on the day, and employ a handler to chase it down the track; then just hold on tight and think of the prize-money.
