CW 27: 6 DAYS: MACHAME ROUTE.
Day 1:
Drive to Machame village. The climb begins at the and of the tarmac.
Walk throught the shambas and through the forest to MAchame hut (3000m)
in 6 hours.
Day 2:
Cross the valley and continue along the steep bridge going on to Rock
ridges and through heather. The route turns into a river gorge, reaching
Shira hut.
Day 3:
Continue east towards Kibo passing the junction, then east towards the
Lava Tower. Shortly after you climb this you to Barranco Hut. (3,940m
Day 4:
From Barranco a steep rocky climb, Barrance Walls, the n up and down
until you come to Karanja Valley and then to Baraffu Hut (4,600m)
Day 5:
Very early start from the summit, first stella point and then to Uhuru
peak (5895m). There are two main ways to descend on this route. –
Marangu or Mwaka; The Mwaka route-Uhuru – Barrafu – Mweka
hut – it will take 6 hours. The route is steep but picturesque.
The Marangu route – Uhuru – Kibo is the main route, its
easier but can be dusty and bussy. It is also longer.
Day 6:
Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate will take about 3 hours. Horombo to Marangu
Gate will take 6 hours. Drive to Arusha for hot showers, dinnerand a
warm bed.
